How often should you be having a stocktake?
As a general rule, retailers are advised to take quarterly stock checks if the store is run by staff and every six months if the shop is run by its owners.
Annual stocktakes are essential to make sure the closing stock figure in your accounts is correct. HMRC will no longer allow you to guess this amount and if they cannot see that an independent company has carried out a valuation, they may launch a costly investigation.
